A business website in Nepal typically costs NPR 60,000 to NPR 150,000. An e-commerce store runs NPR 150,000 to NPR 500,000. A custom web application starts around NPR 200,000 and climbs past a million for anything genuinely complex.
Those numbers are useless on their own, and every agency in Kathmandu publishes some version of them. The question worth answering is not what a website costs. It is what moves your quote from one end of that range to the other — because that is the part you can actually control.
This guide breaks down the real cost drivers, the expenses most quotes leave out, and what happens at the bottom of the market. We build these sites, so the numbers here reflect how projects are actually scoped rather than how they are advertised.
Website cost in Nepal at a glance
| Project type | Typical range (NPR) | Realistic timeline | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Template site, lightly customised | 15,000 – 40,000 | 1–2 weeks | Proving an idea exists |
| Business website, 5–10 pages | 60,000 – 150,000 | 4–8 weeks | Most established SMEs |
| E-commerce store | 150,000 – 500,000 | 8–14 weeks | Selling online at volume |
| Custom web application | 200,000 – 1,000,000+ | 3–9 months | Software, not a brochure |
| Enterprise platform | 1,000,000+ | 6 months+ | Regulated or multi-role systems |
Most quality business websites land between NPR 80,000 and NPR 120,000. If you are being quoted far outside that band in either direction, the next section explains why.
What actually drives the number
Five variables account for most of the spread between two quotes for what sounds like the same website.
1. How many unique page templates you need
This is the single biggest driver, and it is almost never how clients think about their site. A twenty-page website with four templates — home, standard page, blog listing, blog post — costs far less than an eight-page site where every page is bespoke. You are paying for distinct layouts, not for pages.
When you ask for a quote, count your templates, not your pages. It will change the conversation.
2. Custom design versus adapted design
A design built from your brand, content and conversion goals takes considerably longer than adapting a purchased theme. Both are legitimate. The cost difference is typically NPR 30,000 to NPR 60,000 on a business site, and the practical difference shows up when you need something the theme never anticipated.
3. Integrations
Every external system your site must talk to adds scope: payment gateways such as eSewa or Khalti, a CRM, an email platform, a booking system, an accounting tool. Each one needs building, testing and error handling for when the other service is down. Two integrations is a detail. Six is a project of its own.
4. Content
The most consistently underestimated line item. If you supply finished copy and images, your quote covers implementation. If the agency must write the copy, source photography and structure the information, expect NPR 20,000 to NPR 50,000 more — and a longer timeline, because content is what most projects end up waiting on.
5. How much you want to edit yourself
A site where you can change a phone number costs less than one where you can build new landing pages without a developer. Flexible content management means more configuration, more editor training and more testing. It is usually worth it, but it is not free.
Business websites: NPR 60,000 – 150,000
This is where most Nepali SMEs sit. At this level you should expect custom design work against your brand, five to ten pages, mobile-responsive layouts, a content management system, contact forms, basic on-page SEO, analytics, and a handover that includes training.
What pushes a project toward the top of the band: multi-language support, a genuine blog with categories and author pages, several integrations, or heavy animation and interaction work.
What keeps it near the bottom: a clear brand already in place, finished content ready on day one, and a decision-maker who can approve without a committee.
If you are scoping this kind of project, our custom website development page covers what is included in detail.
E-commerce: NPR 150,000 – 500,000
Selling online adds a layer of complexity that surprises people. Beyond the storefront you need product data structures, inventory, at least one payment gateway, delivery logic, order management, tax handling and a checkout that has been tested against real failure cases.
Cost scales with three things above all: the number of products and how they vary, how many payment and delivery options you support, and whether the store must sync with existing inventory or accounting systems. A hundred simple products is straightforward. Twenty products with size, colour and stock variations across three warehouses is not.
A working store with a handful of payment options generally lands between NPR 200,000 and NPR 350,000. See e-commerce development for scope details, and starting an e-commerce business in Nepal for the commercial decisions that come first.
Custom web applications: NPR 200,000 and up
If users log in and the software does work for them — managing records, running a process, generating reports — you are commissioning software, not a website. Different discipline, different cost structure.
Applications need data modelling, authentication, role-based permissions, audit trails, automated testing and a deployment pipeline. None of that is visible on the surface, which is why application quotes routinely shock clients expecting website prices.
Enterprise systems in regulated domains sit at the top of the range because compliance is a design constraint from day one, not a feature bolted on later. Our MaxPilot NDIS care platform is an example of what that scope looks like in practice — participant records, rostering, claims and audit trails, each with its own permission model.
For scoping, see web application development.
Timelines move with the same variables — how long a website actually takes to build breaks those down week by week.
The costs most quotes leave out
The build is a one-off. Running a website is not. Budget for these from the start.
| Item | Typical cost (NPR) | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Domain registration | 1,500 – 2,500 | Annually |
| Hosting | 5,000 – 15,000 | Annually |
| SSL certificate | 0 – 8,000 | Annually (often free) |
| Maintenance and updates | 2,000 – 8,000 | Monthly |
| Content updates beyond your allowance | Hourly or retainer | As needed |
| SEO, if you want to be found | 15,000+ | Monthly |
Maintenance is the one people skip, and it is the one that costs most to skip. An unmaintained WordPress site accumulates known vulnerabilities in its plugins until something finds them. Recovering a compromised site — forensic backup, closing the entry route, rotating credentials, removing the malicious code, restoring clean core files — costs considerably more than a year of maintenance would have.
What NPR 15,000 actually buys, and why it usually fails
You can get a website in Nepal for fifteen thousand rupees. Here is what that price implies.
At that budget nobody is doing discovery, writing content, or testing across devices. The work is a purchased theme with your logo dropped in and demo content swapped for yours. Often the developer never transfers the hosting account, so you cannot move the site without them.
The failure mode is rarely immediate. The site launches and looks acceptable. Six months later you need a change the theme cannot make, or a plugin update breaks the layout, or you discover the site loads in eight seconds on mobile and has never appeared in a search result. Now you are paying someone to rebuild it — and rebuilding on top of a bad foundation costs more than starting clean.
A cheap site is a reasonable choice if you genuinely need a placeholder while proving a business idea. It is a poor choice if you expect the website to generate enquiries.
How to get a quote you can compare
Most quotes are incomparable because each agency scoped something different. To get like-for-like numbers, give every agency the same brief containing:
- Your page list, grouped by template, not by page
- Whether you are supplying content or expect it written
- Every third-party system that must be integrated, named
- Who needs to edit what after launch
- Your actual deadline and what is driving it
Then ask three questions that separate serious agencies from the rest: Do I own the code and the hosting account on completion? What is explicitly out of scope? What happens if we need changes after launch?
Vague answers to any of those tend to become expensive later. We cover the full vetting process in how to choose a web development company in Nepal.
Frequently asked questions
Is NPR 15,000 enough for a business website?
For a placeholder, yes. For a site expected to generate enquiries, no. At that budget there is no discovery, no custom design, no content work and no testing — you are buying a theme with your logo on it. Businesses that start there usually rebuild within two years.
How long does a website take to build in Nepal?
A business website takes four to eight weeks, e-commerce eight to fourteen, and a custom application three to nine months. The most common cause of delay is not development — it is waiting for content and feedback from the client side.
Why do quotes for the same website vary so much?
Because they are rarely for the same website. One may assume you supply content while another includes copywriting; one may adapt a theme while another designs from scratch. Ask each agency what is excluded and the differences become visible immediately.
Should I pay monthly or one-off?
The build is usually one-off, typically staged across milestones. Hosting and maintenance are ongoing. Be cautious with arrangements where a low monthly fee means the agency retains ownership of your site — check what you keep if you leave.
Do I need to pay for SEO separately?
A well-built site includes technical SEO foundations: clean structure, fast loading, proper metadata, a working sitemap. Ranking for competitive terms is ongoing work and is priced separately — see our SEO packages or the detailed breakdown in how much SEO costs in Nepal.
What if my budget is below the ranges here?
Reduce scope, not quality. A well-built four-page site beats a badly-built fifteen-page one, and you can add pages later on a foundation that supports them. Any agency worth hiring will help you cut scope rather than quietly cut corners.
Getting an accurate number for your project
Published ranges only take you so far. The difference between NPR 80,000 and NPR 200,000 comes down to specifics — templates, integrations, content, and who maintains it afterwards.
